History of Carolina Beach Music...

Now celebrating its 40th year, the Carolina Beach Music Festival invites visitors to experience a sound born right here on the Carolina coast more than 80 years ago.

Just across the bridge, the historic community of Sea Breeze came alive in the 1940s as the birthplace of what we now call “beach music.” Its lively juke joints filled the air with rhythm & blues, swing, and boogie—creating a soundtrack that would shape generations.

A short trip away in Carolina Beach, oceanfront dance halls—known as “jump joints”—turned that music into a movement. It was here that “The Shag,” a smooth, partner-style dance, took hold and became a defining part of coastal culture.

Today, visitors don’t just hear beach music—they step into its story. The Carolina Beach Music Festival brings that legacy to life with live performances, dancing by the sea, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else.
